The Perfect Headshot
A headshot is one technique that I started working on from the beginning and when I take a picture of a person’s face, it can reach as deep as the soul. This would seem like a simple task for a photographer because what could go wrong with taking a picture of a face? But the truth is, a headshot can be more than just a picture and it can be the start of a professional career for many people such as actors, models and even realtors.
Headshots are some of the first skills that I have learned as a photographer. I have learned that I have to really pay attention to make my headshots stand out!
The Eyes are the Window to the Soul
This saying is often overused but it is one that can never get old in photography. When I start taking headshots of someone, I always want to focus on their eyes. The eyes can create a masterpiece that will tell its own story for ages to come.
I like to make sure that I am taking clear and crisp pictures of their eyes and that I am capturing who that person is. When I focus on their eyes, it helps me to become part of the subject’s world.
Play with the Angles
When I take headshots, I like to get up close and personal. Sometimes I will change angles until I feel that I have the perfect shot. When I take pictures of guys, I like to move my camera at an upwards angle and when I take pictures of women, I turn my camera down. This can make the look feel different.
I alway want my subjects to be happy with their pictures and I like to make the men feel and look masculine and the women to be soft and gentle!
Notice the Lighting
I always like to pay attention to the lighting when I want my pictures to be perfect. If I take a picture of my model up close, I have to make sure that I diffuse the light so that the skin can be bright and healthy looking.
When I want to make my model look perfect, I can use the light to remove blemishes and to make everything look perfect!
Use a Hair Light
I absolutely love using a hair-light. When I do this, it can make my pictures look deeper. If I put the light close or behind the model, it can make the picture stand out.
Sometimes I choose to take pictures in the sun or even use a flash on my camera so that my model can have the right kind of personality in the photograph!
Let the Expression Match the Shot
My favorite part about taking pictures is to make sure that my model or subject has the right expression so that I can tell their story! No one wants someone to look silly when they are posing for something special.
I always try to make sure that I get my model to laugh or to have a natural look by telling a joke or saying something that makes them feel at ease.
Picture taking is the best of all worlds! I get to be part of everyone’s special day while making them feel special, too!
